Writing your Life Story

Jane says … ‘the first part of writing your life story is to introduce yourself to the reader and then decide on the method you’re going to use to write about your life ... chronological or perhaps using the VIPs in your life … List the people who have mattered to you in life.  Use each one as a heading and use them to tell stories about your own life such as ‘when I was seven my baby sister was born’ … or just pick one subject such as cars ‘the blue Cortina I bought with my first wage packet … I drove to Brighton in it with some friends and it broke down….’

Jane suggests you might use Illustrations … use postcards (she had one student who told her whole life this way), photographs, theatre or concert programmes.

About Jane Corry

Jane Corry trained as a journalist and wrote for Woman’s Own, interviewing celebrities such as Abba and Julie Walters. After her children were born, she freelanced for magazines and newspapers including The Daily Telegraph, but always yearned to write novels. Initially published as a romance writer, she was inspired to write psychological thrillers by a three-year spell as writer in residence in a high-security male prison. Her books explore the emotional effect of crime on “ordinary” families, and are set in the south-west. She has had ten Sunday Times bestsellers published by Penguin, has charted in the US and Canada, and has spoken at major literary festivals worldwide. Earlier this summer she was interviewed live on Radio 2 by Jeremy Vine about My Sister’s Secret (number 9 in UK paperback fiction in 2026). Her next novel, 'The Night I Lied' published by Penguin, in June 2027. She also writes short satires for Woman’s Weekly, Woman and Woman’s Own. Jane runs workshops on writing novels and life stories. “I get many of my ideas from things which have happened to me in life,” she says. “It’s crucial to write down our own experiences for future generations, who are often left with unnamed photos and vague stories about great aunts! It’s also good for our wellbeing, helping us spot patterns in our behaviour and live each day to the full.” A former Royal Literary Fund Fellow and Oxford University creative writing tutor, she is a regular judge for the Koestler Awards, a national prison arts scheme. Her awards include the Vera Brittain short story prize, and she has been runner-up in The Lady short story competition and shortlisted for the Margery Allingham Short Mystery Competition. She still contributes to The Daily Telegraph and swims daily in the sea, where she often gets ideas. Newsletter, free writing tips and books: www.janecorryauthor.com
